With the glut of authors that have crowded the self-publishing space over the last few years (hey, I'm one of them), it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to deciding which books to invest time on. It was apparent to me after the first paragraph that 'The Feral Sentence" was a keeper. It's a compelling read and G. C.keeps the action and the plot moving forward at a good clip. It was easy to get into the flow of "just one more chapter..." and I blame G. C. for making me lose a few hours of sleep as I neared the of the book, unable to put my Kindle down and close my eyes until I learned what happened to Brone and her squad. I avoided looking at the clock when I finally finished, afraid of knowing how late I stayed up. I won't rehash the plot, but I will mention that although it's targeted at the YA population, the book contains all of the elements of a great read; relatable characters, interesting setting, and a believable premise. One of the best measures of a good book, at least to me, is whether or not I was entertained by it and thought about it for a while after I finished it. It's a strong yes on both counts for "The Feral Sentence". I highly recommend it.Product details

Convicted murderers, all women, are exiled to a remote island to serve their sentences, living off the land with no law but their own. It's "Lord of the Flies" time on this strange island, and only the strong and clever survive. They aren't going home at the end of their sentences...this is for life.
There are at least two factions of women living on the island, deadly enemies who kill when they meet. The Northers make a concerted effort to start a war with the other tribe, and succeed in wiping them almost completely out.
There are hostile things and wild animals in the jungle, and they're also dangerous to the women. Wild boar provide good meat for the tribe, but the possibility of meeting a leopard or tiger out there keep the women from exploring the jungle freely. No one knows why there is such a strange variety of wildlife present, creatures which normally would be found on different continents, not all on one island.
All they know is that the new women who are dropped on the island by the government have to be taught quickly how to survive...or die.
Received an ARC of Book 1 Episode 1 of “The Feral Sentence” from G.C. Julien. The quick paced, YA Dystopian novella was immediately captivating. In the year 2087, the corrupt government has solved prison over population by banishing criminal to islands. Our main character, an 18 year old girl, Lydia Brone, was wrongfully convicted and dropped into the wilds. The unique premise of dropping convicted criminals with nothing but the clothes on their back into the sea to sink or swim to an island inhabited by other convicts...some quite savage...definitely induces nightmares. The cliffhanger at the end of Book 1 espidode 1 lead to research that resulted in finding this compilation which included all four episodes of Book 1. All four ended with cliffhangers, but were filled with adrenaline fueled action as, Brone, learns how to survived in the “wilds” and comes to understand how some of her fellow inmates have become so hardened and almost feral. Brone and those closest to her whether ally or enemy are complex and multilayered characters. Learning their backgrounds and experiences helps in understanding them even if you hate their violent, savage tendencies. Julien writes so vividly one feels the hot humid heat against your skin; smells the salty scent of the ocean, along with musty mold, damp earth and floral odors of the jungle; hears the crashing ocean waves and cascading waterfalls; not to mention seeing the green hues of the dense and tangled vegetation of the jungle. It is amazing how some of these women can work together to combine their skills to struggle to survive with nothing but what they find in their hostile environment. Brones transformation in such a short period of time is both heart breaking and heart warming as she grows, becomes more desensitized yet clings to her humanity. If you like adrenaline packed action, driven by a character based story with heart, you will love this novel. Delighted to find this novel and Book 2 are offered on Unlimited. Looking forward to seeing where Beast of Prey will lead.
The Feral Sentence is another entry into the getting a bit saturated, society has had enough of paying for prisons so has decided to sentence prisoners to time on an isolated island where they must fend for themselves genre. In theory their supposed to be picked up after doing their time, but you know they won't be. G. C. Julien's contribution this genre does have a lot of the same old same old elements in the story most of these do, but what makes it up there with the best is the characters. The main narrator Brone, is initially a meek bottom of the pecking order in free society, who did something one day she had to do and is now doing three years on the island because of it. But she grows throughout the story (or stories, this is a compilation of 4 shorter stories) and deals with a range of other women in the community that whacked her over the head when she made it to shore, and assigned her the duty of hunter, something she didn't think she was suited to or prepared for. There's also dangers outside of her village, cannibal women who are known as Orgres, tigers, panthers, monkeys and other predators. As well as a rival tribe that broke away from the village that Brone is on called The Northerners. Murders at their hands happen to those who venture outside the relative safety of the village, as does the threat of war. Brone just wants to do her time, but it doesn't seem like the elements, those in her village, or outside of it will let her.
The action does continue on after you've got to the last page, so you will have to get Beast of Prey books to continue, but honestly you're pretty hooked anyway so you probably will want to anyway. I could easily see this being turned into a TV show. Sort of like The 100 but with only women, that hopefully won't eventually go down the supernatural path and become stupid like that initially great show did.
